How would WiMAX be in Kuwait?

Bojacob Warning: This is a geeky speculation post, so don't expect much humor here. It's coming in the next post, hopefully :)
Things might get very interesting in the coming years. The government has licensed ISPs to use the WiMAX spectrum and allowed them to deply WiMAX internet. I think FastTelco has WiMAX up and running, but I don't believe it has widespread coverage.
There's currently a bit too many caveats with WiMAX. Range isn't all that much in our urban country. If you're more than 2km away from the tower, you better pray you have line of sight, as the only way you're getting WiMAX is through an antenna on your roof. There's quite a few buildings the signal will bump into, meaning you'll need more towers around the country if you're going to have country-wide coverage.
However, let's pretend we have WiMAX coverage in the entire country. Let's also pretend you got Nokia's new WiMAX enabled cell phone, meaning you have fast and reliable access to the internet anywhere, anyplace. You have Skype planted on your phone, and so do all your friends. You want to call someone? Just press his name and he'll receive your call through the Internet. VoIP, they call it.
The line between ISP and mobile telecommunication companies seems to be blurring, and Zain/Wataniya isn't going to like it. Flat fee based calling through the Internet, where all you need is a WiMAX enabled phone with free Skype-to-Skype calling anywhere in the world? They're not going to like it at all. It's adapt, or die.
What's more is that the government won't license telecommunication companies to be independent ISPs. They have to get their internet from the current ISPs in Kuwait. Sooner or later, they'll realize ISPs are trespassing on telecommunication turf and grant them a license. With powerhouses like Zain, you can pretty much spell doom to the ISPs.
I don't know how soon it will be, but I know someday we'll have access to cheap, reliable wireless internet all over the country. Some might say we already have that with 3G, but with the current pricing and unreliable/slow experience, I'd say we're not there just yet. I don't know if WiMAX will be the one to do it either, as it's not without its flaws.
I just know that someday, communication will all be through the Internet. We just have to watch out for lobbies and was6at trying to kill the wave of the future (and they will try hard.)
Ah, Internet, how I love you. Your inevitable domination of the world makes me all fuzzy inside!

A lot of companies in the states that provide landlines are already losing big due to Voip ... its making our lives easier but companies have to think of better strategies
You are right, though don't forget as long as the MOC accepted the Wimax then the telecommunication can't do shit. A month ago I asked one of my uncles who is the head manager for the IT section In MOC asking him if he will close Skype, just like net2phone and the other's. He said no, because what MOC goal is to stop the sails of the cards that are selling in Hawalli for net2phone and so on. So, I can say that no matter how much Zain/Wataniya whine about Skype MOC wont block it because its not causing them any money issues. But, you never know what future has for ISP's and then in this country we have stupid people thinking about money more than technology and ease to people satisfaction.
"I don’t know how soon it will be"
I'd say.. in the year 2031 :)
There goes our carrier :P
i'm no radio expert but i guess if the Wimax coverage was sent from a tall tower directed downwards you won't have such interference from taller buildings but i'll leave this for the experts.
as for the Wimax enabled phone that would be awesome imagine your phone bill is reduced to the monthly subscription only.
we better prepare our C.Vs if Zain gets internet license i have a banak bas6a project ready for implementation :D
It would'be been better to help people know what Wimax is in the foooiisst place m8~~ ! So, here you go guys look no more! The geeks are here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WiMAX
I am dreaming of getting Nokia E810 wimax ready phone :`) Just waiting for a wimax to be ready first!!
MJKOUT : The project of yours is no use, all roads spot are taken =p

I really wish we live the day you're talking about, but with the way MOC is treating VoIP as an evil thing rather than a replacement technology for costly one, it's gonna take hell lot of time.
Also, I heard several ups and downs about WiMax deployments worldwide, so in Kuwait, I am not so optimistic so far.
I will wait and see.. :) I am really interested
